Content Description

For the 2018 edition of the Guidelines for Design and Construction documents, the Facility Guidelines Institute developed three books: a volume for hospitals, a new volume for outpatient facilities, and the volume for residential health, care, and support facilities. Each provides basic information on planning, design, construction, and commissioning as well as minimum design requirements for particular facility types. The Guidelines requirements were updated to keep up with changes in health care delivery; to clarify and align requirements, where applicable, between all three Guidelines documents; and to allow flexibility in design to support development of facilities that will meet the needs of owners and their communities over the long term.

The 2018 Residential Guidelines refines the 2014 text and—stemming from the needs of the residential long-term care marketplace—provides guidance for two additional facility types: long-term residential substance abuse treatment facilities and settings for individuals with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities. The revision committee made a concerted effort to base changes on evidence-based research, information from subject matter experts, and experience in the field across a broad spectrum of interrelated disciplines.

The facility design requirements and recommendations presented in the Residential Guidelines have moved away from institutional models to foster development of facilities offering person-centered living environments that support a variety of care models and add to the quality of life for residents. The goal is to help care organizations and designers create homelike physical environments that support positive resident outcomes. Design standards are provided for nursing homes, hospice facilities, assisted living facilities, substance abuse treatment facilities, settings for individuals with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities, independent living settings, adult day care facilities, wellness centers, and outpatient rehabilitation facilities.

About FGI

About FGI, the Guidelines, and the HGRC

The Facility Guidelines Institute is a not-for-profit corporation founded to provide leadership and continuity to the Guidelines revision process. The Guidelines for Design and Construction documents are used by states to regulate health care facility design and construction, as code through adoption, as a basis for state written codes, as an adjunct to state codes, or for reference. The Health Guidelines Revision Committee (HGRC) is a multidisciplinary consensus body of clinicians, administrators, architects, engineers, and authorities having jurisdiction that is convened every four years to revise and update the Guidelines documents.
